Massie wins 3rd straight title but by a narrow margin

WILMINGTON — Clinton-Massie won its third straight SBAAC American Division tennis championship Thursday at the Wilmington High School tennis complex.

But it wasn’t easy on a hot and sunny day.

The Falcons finished the tournament with 38 points while runnerup New Richmond had 36 points.

Though the regular season league is not complete, Clinton-Massie has clinched that title as well.

Wilmington coach Doug Cooper noted New Richmond’s near upset win in the tournament as a sign that tennis is on the rise in the SBAAC.

“This league is growing more and more competitive and it’s been a lot of fun,” said Cooper.

In the American Division, CM or WHS has won every championship since the 2018 season.

Among individuals, Clinton-Massie’s Addison Swope was the first singles winner and will be the player of the year for the second straight season. Also, Brylie Green and Noel Gasaway of CM were championship at first doubles and Lilly Logsdon and Paige Oberweiser were second doubles champions.

Wilmington’s Reagan Henry was second at third singles and Jenna Pletcher and Kiley Comberger were runnersup at second doubles.

Layna Holmes, the WHS first singles player, won her opener against Batavia but it took over three hours to complete the 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 triumph.

Pletcher and Comberger won a three-set tussle in the semifinal round to get to the title match before falling to the Massie duo. Henry played two matches and both went three sets.
