Bates goes 3-0 to win 1st singles in Flight M at Coaches Classic

CINCINNATI — The Blanchester tennis team finished second Saturday in Flight M of the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association Coaches Classic tournament at Northwest High School.

West Clermont won the tournament with 16 points while BHS followed with 14. Goshen was third and Northwest was fourth. Matches were delayed at the start anywhere from 90 to 120 minutes because of rain, BHS coach Matt Sexton said.

“Overall a very successful day for the program,” Sexton said. “We had a shot to win it if a couple of results would have gone a different way.”

Lilly Bates was the first singles champion, winning all three of her matches.

“Lilly is playing some outstanding tennis right now,” Sexton said. “She was not threatened at all in her three matches.”

Lydia Siler was second at second singles while Breanna Weldon and Ryan Maines was runersup at first doubles, and Madison Taylor and Tatum Strange were runnersup at second doubles.

“I thought Lydia played her best tennis of the season in a loss to West Clermont,” said Sexton. “It was very high-level tennis and the match could have gone either way.

“First doubles were one game away from losing to Goshen before rallying for the win to finish 2-1. We got a little unlucky falling just short in a three-way tiebreaker, but I’m so happy for two seniors to gut out a tough win to wrap up their last coaches classic.”
