Hurricane notch win over Panthers in non-league tennis

WILMINGTON — The Wilmington High School tennis team won its third match in the last four with a 4-1 victory over Little Miami Monday on the WHS courts.

Layna Holmes had a 7-5, 6-3 win at first singles.

“Layna hung on in a very tight first set,” said WHS coach Doug Cooper. “She was up 5-4, but Wilkerson just wouldn’t go away. It was that kind of match.

“Layna is just so hard to beat in that situation because she’s so patient and smart. She waits until the time to strike, or for you to make a mistake while she waits. She has become so good at reading an opponent and executing effective tactics for that particular opponent. It’s really fun to watch.”

Cooper said it was a good night for all WHS singles players. In addition to Sofia Castillo and Reagan Henry winning varsity matches, Jenna Pletcher moved to junior varsity and won a singles contest.

“We’ve been looking for opportunities for her to play some singles,” Cooper said. “She’s got her eye on a singles spot for next season.”
