Week 6 Final: Clinton-Massie 38, Wilmington 16

ADAMS TOWNSHIP — Clinton-Massie raced out to a 24-0 lead, then had to hold off Wilmington for a 38-16 win on a soggy Friday night at Frank Irelan Field.

In the 11th annual Kiwanis Club Backyard Bash, the Falcons (4-2) scored three second quarter touchdowns in less than four minutes to seemingly take control of the game, 24-0.

But on the opening kickoff of the second half that was received by Clinton-Massie, Wilmington’s Josiah Puller emerged from the scrum with the football and ran 35 yards for the first WHS score.

The blitzing Hurricane defense thwarted the Falcons in the third period and the offense added a Dylan Groves field goal and a one yard plunge by Jake Stephens to make it anybody’s game at 24-16 going to the fourth period.

Massie scored on the ensuing drive, though, to stem the tide a bit and Wilmington (3-3) committed seven penalties for 68 yards in the final quarter to derail any other comeback thoughts as the Falcons closed out the win.

Puller was a big part of the WHS offense, running for 96 yards. The Hurricane finished with 104 yards on the ground and 92 in the air.

The Falcons totaled 244 yards on offense — 47 for 165 on the ground and 80 yards in the air.

Kaden Zantene and Baron Phipps both had a touchdown pass with Phipps’ scoring play going to Jack Elkins in an end-around pass and Zantene’s a throw to Peyton Warren.

Eli Muterspaw ran for two scores while Warren cashed in the first touchdown run of the game.

Both kickers had solid days with Massie’s Jack Thamann kicking five extra points and a 30 yard field goal. Wilmington’s Dylan Groves booted a 32 yard field goal in the third and added an extra point. He also had punts of 49, 55 and 64 yards. The 55 yarder was wiped out by a WHS penalty.
