Hurricane runs at Saturday Night Lights in Centerville

CENTERVILLE — The Wilmington cross country teams competed Saturday in the Saturday Night Lights meet at Centerville High School.

Alexa Benitez was the top finisher for WHS, placing 31st in the girls race with a time of 23:42.6.

Mia Hollingsworth was next in line with a 27:38.9 run, good for 157th. Taelynn Rooker was 185th in 28:24.5, De’ja Holley 199th in 29:57.7 and Layla Lambcke 212th in 35:02.5.

In the high school boys race, Max McCoy hit the line in 20:21.3 and finished 41st.

David Young was 119th in 22:00.7, Jacob Vance 123rd in 22:03.5, Parker Phillips 171st in 23:43.9, Alexander Bennett 202nd in 25:25.4, Gideon Hackney 211th in 26:27.9 and Braxton Ruddle 222nd in 28:57.6.

“Throughout the event, the conditions deteriorated rapidly, making for muddy and slick evening races for our high school athletes,” WHS coach Karen Heslop said. “They ran strong and smart where we ended up with one PR and one course PR, but all were covered in mud and had fun.”

In the middle school girls race, Josey King was the first Hurricane runner across the line, placing 27th in 14:14.20.

Also, Natalie Connor 50th in 15:21.4; Isabelle Brausch 107th in 16:52.1; Briley Hoggatt 127th in 18:50.2; and Violet Gunther 128th in 18:55.2

In the boys middle school event, Tad Shidaker was 62nd in 13:23.1, Riley Dumford 78th in 13:44.4, Brady Roe 96th in 14:16.7, Caleb Sweetman 114th in 15:05.7 and Jackson Wisecup 146th in 17:18.5.

“Our middle school athletes ran well … four PRs with two course PRs,” Heslop said.
