Kaun, Astros third at SBAAC Cross Country Championships

WILMINGTON — East Clinton’s Landen Kaun was third in the National Division race Saturday at Wilmington College in the SBAAC Cross Country Championships.

Athletes from both National and American divisions competed in the same race on a cool, dry Saturday morning.

Among the American Division runners, Clinton-Massie’s Caleb Werling was seventh in 18:08.03 and Wilmington’s Max McCoy was 12th in 18:40.44. The Falcons were fifth overall in the American standings.

Overall, the Astros were third in the National Division standings, finishing behind runnerup Bethel-Tate by one point. The finish was surprising given the fact East Clinton was without three (Kaiden Roth, Jacob George, Sawyer Fooce) of its top seven runners on the year, coach Josh Simmons said.

Kaun had a personal best of 18:04.21 while teammate Jackson Seabaugh was fifth overall in 18:16.49, also a personal best. Both were first-team all-SBAAC.

“EC was against the odds with the absences,” Simmons said. ‘With a complete team, the Astros were in contention for first on the National side.”

Simmons said six PRs for the boys helped the Astros battle at the top of the team standings.

“To say I’m proud of these guys for stepping up and running their hearts out is an understatement,” said Simmons.
