Lions hand Hurricane 4-1 defeat to split season series (Update quotes)

WILMINGTON — New Richmond and Wilmington split the season series with the Lions picking up a 4-1 win Monday in SBAAC American Division tennis.

Jenna Pletcher and Abbie Hubbard earned the lone win for WHS at second doubles.

“Second doubles … served and lost for the set in the second but they were able to bounce back, after being broken it was still 6-5, and hold on for a 7-5 edge in the set and seal the win,” Wilmington coach Doug Cooper said. “In a close match, the big games and big points are magnified.”

The Hurricane drops to 7-7 overall, 6-4 in the American Division.

“We are ready to put (this match) behind us and look forward to some good matchups against Carroll (Tuesday), have a night off and get ready for what should be a very exciting SBAAC American Division tournament,” Cooper added.

The American Division tournament will be held 9 a.m. Thursday. The National Division tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The Lions are 7-3 in the division and now a game ahead of the Hurricane. New Richmond is 13-3 on the year.

Wilmington won the first meeting 3-2.

“This is our eighth season in this league and I’ve never seen such parity on the singles courts,” Cooper said. “There are just a lot of good singles players around the league, when typically there seem to be just a few head shoulders above the rest.

“Layna (Holmes, first singles) was serving for the first set and I thought she had the momentum to hold serve and win the set. She ended up losing in a tiebreaker.”
