WILMINGTON, Ohio — At the Clinton County Commissioners’ meeting on Monday morning, a proclamation was presented officially declaring October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The resolution recognizes the critical need for increased awareness and prevention of domestic violence. The resolution highlights the alarming statistics surrounding domestic violence, with one in four women and one in nine men experiencing domestic violence in their lifetime. It also addresses the long-term emotional and psychological harm that domestic violence can have on children exposed to it.

In attendance to accept the proclamation were representatives from the Alternatives to Violence Center, including executive director Dara Gullette, Jordan Gillespie, Kim Lute, and Maddi Saunders. The center was acknowledged for its significant efforts in supporting victims of domestic violence. In 2023, the center served over 1,677 individuals, with 88.55% of those individuals identifying as victims of domestic violence.

The proclamation emphasizes that Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about preventing domestic violence and urges support for the organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services, and assistance to victims. It also highlights the work of advocates and organizations who empower victims and survivors to live free from fear and abuse.
