Hurricane outlasts Astros in five-set battle

WILMINGTON — Back-to-back matches, back-to-back five-setters for the Wilmington High School volleyball team.

Both matches, though, ended with Hurricane victories, the latest an epic county battle with East Clinton that went to WHS 25-21, 19-25, 25-13 25-22, 15-13 Wednesday at Fred Summers Court.

Wilmington (8-9) has won four matches in a row. The Cane defeated Western Brown in five sets on Tuesday.

“Another marathon match,” Hurricane head coach Stephanie Reveal said. “Was (senior) night as well and you never play well with the emotions and just the extra stuff going on. Then put on top the match last night with Western Brown. I’m just happy we got out with the W.

“We were sloppy and undisciplined, and we have to be able to manage that better.”

East Clinton (13-4) had its four-match win streak end with the loss.

“Wilmington played a fast game and found some of our weaknesses, but the girls played with heart the entire game,” EC head coach Sarah Sodini said. “There were so many awesome effort plays and smart decisions. I am very proud of them.”
