MIAMISBURG — The golf season for the Clinton-Massie boys team surprisingly came to an end Tuesday afternoon in the Division II Southwest District Championship at Pipestone Golf Club.
Owen Goodwin was seventh among individuals with a 3-over 75. Andy Steed, the state runnerup last season, had a 77 and did not advance.
“Just a bad day,” Clinton-Massie coach Phil Larrick said. “I thought we were ready to but knew we absolutely had to have our best round of the year (to advance to state).”
Wilmington freshman Gunnar Martin also had a 77 and tied with Steed for 16th place.
Jack DeHart had an 88 for Massie while Colson Morgan came in with 91. Micah Ruther had a 105 for the Falcons.
Archbishop Alter was lights out, shooting a 4-over team total to win the championship.
Springfield Northwestern was the team runnerup at 14 shots off the pace. Wyoming was third at 311 and Clinton-Massie tied with Bethel for sixth place with a 331.
“That is a little deceiving,” Larrick said. “We were third or fourth all day until we realized not only was the team eliminated but Owen and Andy were also virtually eliminated.”
Individually, Finley Bartlett and Jack Webb of Wyoming tied Andrew Gochenouer all tied with 71s as tournament medalists.
With Wyoming not making it as a team, Bartlett and Webb earned the two state berths to Akron’s Firestone Country Club.
“It was a very emotional bood-bye to two of the best golfers (Steed and Goodwin) and their families I have ever coached,” Larrick said. “I wish we could have sent Andy and Owen out on a better note. I could never thank them enough for their dedication to Clinton-Massie golf.”
