MASON — Lilly Bates won two matches Thursday at the Division II Sectional Tennis Championship at Mason High School.

Bates, who finishes with 19 wins for the season, was knocked out of the tournament by No. 1 seed Sophia Thompson of Indian Hill 0-6, 0-6.

Bates finished the season with a 19-8, among the most ever in a single season in BHS history. Andrea Gibson won 22 matches during the 2003 season.

“Really proud of our efforts,” Blanchester coach Matt Sexton said. “We didn’t lose to anyone worse than us, so it was a successful day. Grateful for my three seniors: Lydia (Siler), Ryan (Maines) and Breanna (Weldon). They’re outstanding kids that have been a real joy to coach over the years. I’m really going to miss them all.

“A great end to the season for Lilly, who really came into her own over the last three weeks. It was fun watching her playing one of the top players in the nation in her age group in the quarterfinals. Thompson is the two-time state runner-up, and she’s an incredible player. We got to 30-love against her in the second set, but that was as close as we came to getting a game. Still, I’m so proud of what Lilly has accomplished and excited to see what she can do during her senior year next year.”

East Clinton also participated in the sectional but did not win a match.
