WILMINGTON — Clinton-Massie remained unbeaten Wednesday with a 4-1 win over Wilmington in SBAAC American Division tennis on the WHS courts.

“I’m proud of the way we battled, but Massie’s athleticism was the difference,” Wilmington coach Doug Cooper said.

Wilmington won at third singles, where Reagan Henry outlasted Dakota Cartner 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

The first doubles match was a thriller as well with Massie’s unbeaten duo of Brylie Green and Noel Gasaway held on for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) win over Bailey Wheeler and Cary Holliday.

“Dakota kept sending back everything Reagan could throw her way and it was a lot. That was a great match,” Cooper said. “So was that epic first doubles match but we all knew that was coming.”

Massie coach Julie Kirby said, “Wilmington has been the Falcons biggest competition for the past two years. This was a hard-fought win for Green and Gasaway.”

Cooper said Addison Swope and Maria Jones were strong at the top two spots in the Clinton-Massie lineup.

Swope and Jones are both unbeaten in league play, Kirby said.

“This was a very close match and two of the five courts had to be decided in a third set,” Kirby said. “Falcons have known since the beginning of the season that Wilmington would not be an easy match and they had to work for the win.”

The Falcons are 11-0 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Wilmington is second in the American at 5-2 and 5-5 overall.

“With 11 of the 14 seniors on the court graduating, this rivalry will hit the reset button and see what happens next year,” said Cooper. “For now, the defending champs are still on top.”
