A pair of 3-pointers down the stretch lifted the Wilmington College men’s basketball team to an 86-81 win over Ohio Northern in Ohio Athletic Conference play at Hermann Court’s Fred Raizk Arena.
The Quakers are now 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the OAC.
The Polar Bears are 5-9 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Zach McCorkle led WC with 22 points, on 8 of 11 shooting. He had 4 rebounds and 4 assists as well.
Christian Jones added 16 while Brandon Smith and Andrew Russell had 14 points each.
Konnor Baker led ONU with 20 points. He hit 5 of 7 from the field and 9 of 12 from the free throw line.
Wilmington was 32 for 60 from the field but Ohio Northern was a tick better at 30 for 55.
The Quakers defense, whoever, forced ONU into 17 turnovers, turning those miscues into 19 points.
Smith’s 14 were in a substitute role as Wilmington outscored Ohio Northern 22-12 off the bench.
The Polar Bears had their way inside, scoring 50 points in the paint and outscored WC 14-6 in second-chance points.
Wilmington trailed much of the first half. McCorkle hit a layup late in the half that started a 10-0 run.
McCorkle ended the run with a free throw that put the Quakers up 49-47 with 16:58 to play in the game.
After ONU tied it at 49-49, Wilmington went on another scoring spree. Jones hit a 3-pointer to start it and Russell finished it with a layup at 11:24 to make it 62-49.
But Ohio Northern battled back to even at 79-79.
DJ Iles, a Fayetteville High School product, then drained a 3 at 1:22 to give WC the lead for good. Russell buried a 3 with 23 seconds to play to put the game on ice.
