Ladycats notch SBC road win 49-44

FELICITY — Despite a strong start, Blanchester had to hold on for a 49-44 Southern Buckeye Conference win over Felicity Thursday night at the FHS gym.

The Ladycats jumped out to an 11-2 lead but then the Lady Cardinals battled back to tie the game at halftime, 27-27.

“It was close the whole game,” said BHS coach Bennie Carroll. “There were several lead changes. In that third quarter, it went back and forth a good bit.”

Blanchester’s struggles in the first half came as a result of what has been such a key part of the team’s success this season.

“They did as well against our press as anybody,” Carroll said. “It was helping them more than it was helping us. At halftime, we just decided to play more traditional man-to-man defense. The object is to win the game, not prove a point. I just felt we weren’t containing them.”

Blanchester outscored Felicity 13-8 in the third quarter and then played even in the fourth to secure the win.

BHS is now 14-3 overall and 5-1 in the SBC National Division. Felicity falls to 5-11 overall, 1-5 in league play.

Rachael Doyle led the BHS offense with 14 points while Kayla Dugger was right there with 13 points.

“Kayla had a nice game,” Carroll said. “She had eight or nine rebounds to go with her points. She made some big plays for us. Emma Gundler came off the bench to make some plays for us. She had several rebound basketball and played well defensively. Rachael had another beast of a game on the boards.”

Felicity’s Ashley Moore led all scorers with 23 points.

“She’s as good a player as we’ve faced all year,” said Carroll.
