CEDARVILLE — Wilmington sophomore Simon Heys qualified for the upcoming Div. I Southwest Regional cross country meet at Troy’s Memorial Stadium.
Heys clocked his second fastest time of the year, finishing in 17:04. He holds the WHS record at 16:41. He was 28th overall and the top 32 individuals advanced to the regional meet.
Heys will run in the regional meet 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Troy.
Wilmington’s Tyler Parks and Ryland Bowman were disqualified from the race, as was a runner from Bellbrook.
“Halfway through the race Tyler got stepped on from behind,” WHS coach Eileen Grosse said. “Then he stepped in a hole.”
Grosse said Parks, who has been a strong runner for the Hurricane this season, had issues with both his Achilles tendon and knee as a result of the mishaps.
Shortly after Parks had his problems, teammate Bowman came to his rescue.
“Ryland assisted him (Parks) to the finish, along with a kid from Edgewood,” Grosse said.
As a result of the DQs, Wilmington finished 17th in the team standings.
“We had hoped for better than that,” Grosse said. “But you can’t get upset with kids who tried to help a fellow team member.”
